Description

Soda Ash (also known as washing soda, Sodium carbonate and soda crystals) is the inorganic compound with the formula Na2CO3 and its various hydrates. All forms are white, water-soluble salts. All forms have a strongly alkaline taste and give moderately alkaline solutions in water. Historically it was extracted from the ashes of plants growing in sodium-rich soils. Because the ashes of these sodium-rich plants were noticeably different from ashes of wood (once used to produce potash), sodium carbonate became known as “soda ash”. It is produced in large quantities from Soda Ash and limestone by the Solvay process.

USES

After it is processed, soda ash helps create a variety of products across many industries, such as building, automotive, home, cleaning, energy, beverage, food and glass, bakeware, industrial, water treatment, oil and gas.

• Is Soda Aash good for cleaning?

Clean dish cloths and dirty tea towels in a strong solution of soda ash and hot water to remove dirt and grease. Sprinkle on slimy paths and driveways, dampen, then leave for at least 12 hours, brush off. Revive your silverware by soaking in 1/2 cup soda ash to 3 litres hot water in a bowl lined with aluminium foil.

• Can I put Soda Ash down the drain?

Soda Ash may be able to be washed down the drain but be aware that it’s quite alkaline and could create pH problems if you have a septic system. It probably won’t do any harm to wash a small amount of soda ash solution down the drain followed by a lot of water.

• Is Soda Ash safe in drinking water?

A wide variety of water softeners use soda ash or sodium carbonate. As a result, you can wash with soap effectively because the water is less acidic. A reduction in sodium content will also contribute to water quality–causing people who limit sodium intake to be at a greater risk.

• Is Soda Ash good for soil?

Many homeowners use calcium carbonate to lime their soils and raise the pH. Using soda ash will raise the pH, but it will also make the soil salty, which can reduce plant growth.
