Description
Sodium triphosphate or sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP) is an inorganic compound. It is the sodium salt of the polyphosphate penta-anion, which is the conjugate base of triphosphoric acid. It is produced on a large scale as a component of many domestic and industrial products, especially detergents. It is a preservative for seafood, meats, poultry, and animal feeds. Other uses include ceramics, leather, anticaking, setting retarders, flame retardants, paper, anticorrosion pigments, textiles, rubber manufacture, fermentation and antifreeze. Environmental problems associated with eutrophication is attributed to its widespread use.
Formula: Na5P3O10
What is the function of STPP in detergent?
In household cleaning products, sodium tripolyphosphate is used most widely as builder. In conjunction with surfactants, it allows detergents to perform efficiently in all washing conditions. It is widely used in laundry detergents, dishwasher detergents, industrial and institutional detergents.
What is the function of STPP in water treatment?
Hard water usually causes scale deposits, which will result in higher operating costs. For that, when scale accumulates, it will cause a decrease in the flow rate through the cleaning. Hard ions are the common metal ions in water, including calcium and magnesium. calcium is the main sources of scale formuation. Polyphosphates can trap calcium and magnesium, dissolve the formed compounds and prevent the formathion of deposits. People can choose the more suitable phosphates according to the PH value of water to achieve the best reults. SHMP performs very well in the neutral PH value range. as phrophosphate and polyphosphate perform best under alkaline conditions.
Is sodium tripolyphosphate natural?
Sodium phosphate is naturally occurring in many foods. It’s also added to foods to maintain freshness, alter texture, and achieve a variety of other effects. Sodium phosphate is considered safe by the FDA but should be avoided by certain people, including those with kidney disease.
Is sodium tripolyphosphate harmful?
Tripolyphosphate and sodium bisulfite are considered safe in low doses by the Food and Drug Administration. However, about 1 percent of the general population in the United States has a sensitivity to sulfites.
What are the side effects of sodium tripolyphosphate?
Some side effects can be serious. If you experience any of these symptoms or those listed in the IMPORTANT WARNING section, call your doctor immediately:
Irregular Heartbeat, Vomiting, Fainting, Seizures, Rash, Hives, Itching
Swelling of the eyes, Face, Lips, Tongue, Mouth or Throat.
